Meet Anwar Salandy

In a continued effort to promote the positivity that still exists and thrives within the city limits of Trenton, NJ, I bring to you Mr. Anwar Salandy. A  journalist, blogger, and also a city activist, he graciously took some time to answer a few questions.

1. What or who inspired you to be a journalist/blogger?

It’s funny you asked, public intellectual Cornel West has inspired my life a lot. His outspoken passion for social justice really inspired me while I was in college. So, I wanted to fuse my own passion for social justice with telling people stories through interviews.

2. You are the one usually doing interviews. Which interview is your favorite?

Hands down, Cornel West was my favorite interview. I was definitely nervous but I took my time and prepared well before the interview so I was ready.

3. What role do you believe the residents of the city of Trenton, NJ need to play in revitalizing our struggling city?

I think the residents of Trenton will have to play a major role in turning around the city. With dwindling resources, a mayor under investigation, and a governor that refuses to intervene, we’re going to need all the help we can get from everyday people like you and I. I want to do more, perhaps workshops on writing or tutoring. I’m the type of person that thinks that things can always be better when we all chip in and do our part. The change won’t come overnight, but with commitment and effort, change will come to Trenton.

4. Do you believe Trenton, NJ gets a fair depiction in the media?

I would say a resounding ‘no’ because there are so many positive stories here in the city that don’t get the coverage it deserves. Sadly enough, I think the old saying in journalism is true, ‘if it bleeds, it leads’. This is a big reason I wanted to start a blog, to show the world another side of Trenton that doesn’t get the attention it deserves.

5. What upcoming new projects can the public look forward to from you?

I’m planning on doing more discussion forums on social issues like poverty, joblessness, crime, leadership, etc here in the city. Stay tuned and thanks for the interview!
