Today I am happy to introduce you to Narubi Selah!! Poet, Emcee, a true artist. A great representation of TRENTON, NEW JERSEY!
What is your inspiration? How did you develop your style of poetry/emceeing?
I am inspired by almost everything. Other artists. Visual artist. Film. Love. Pain. Anything that moves me emotionally or makes me think. What I am uninspired by are inauthentic things. Anything inorganic turns me off completely.
You have performed on “Russell Simmons Def Poetry, at the million youth march, just to name a few. Out of all the performances which one was your favorite?
I must be honest..my so called “biggest” shows weren’t even some of my favorites. My smallest most intimate shows were the most inspiring to me. I did a hole in the wall once in VA that I will never forget. Rakim was the headliner and it was AMAZING. The crowd was crazy. The energy was crazy. My point is, sometimes it’s not about the size of the venue or the notoriety, but more so about the energy and the passion.
Being a Native Trentonian how do you feel about how the city is being depicted through media outlets?
Trenton is a hood. Trenton isn’t the only hood in the world. It isn’t the only hood in America. It isn’t the only hood where crime, poverty, limited opportunity, and miseducation exists. The media has only one job and that job is to persuade the masses; to legislate thought and ultimately to control one actions. Trenton’s unfortunate adversities must be highlighted in order to keep the jails full. Ultimately, so they can get a check.
Should residents along with city officials take responsibility for the decline of our city?
I think that’s fruitless. EVERYONE is responsible. To be honest, I would prefer that the citizens take the city back because in many cases, city officials cannot be trusted and they are responsible for many of the issues that exist in the first place. Follow the money and you’ll find the root of the problem.
Finally, do you have any upcoming projects or events coming up that the public should be aware of? Where can readers find “Narubi Selah’s” previous work?
Right now I am promoting my sophomore album “The Architect” You can keep up with my performances by following me on Twitter @narubiselah.
Below are a couple of video clips that shows off Ms. Selah’s lyrical prowess!!
